Browse Oenpelli Prints

Aboriginal artist Gabriel Maralngurra was born and grew up in Oenpelli, a community in northern Arnhem Land. He has been one of the driving forces of Injalak Arts & Crafts, the local community art centre, since it first begun as an Adult Education Centre in 1986. Gabrielle attended courses in screeprinting, and, as an active committee member, he has served terms as President and Treasurer.

Gabriel’s brother Roderick Maralngurra is also an artist and the stylistic similarities of their work is very evident.

As well as producing his own paintings and limited edition prints, Gabriel has travelled extensively as an ambassador for Injalak throughout Australia and, in 1995, to Shanghai, China to represent Injalak at the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade exhibition of paintings from the Kuwinjku Seasonal Calendar. In 1993 he accompanied Lawrence Nganjmirra to the award ceremony for the National Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Heritage Commission Art Awards.

He has shown in group exhibitions in Fremantle, Darwin, Sydney Perth and Melbourne and also in Finland.
