Desert
[Region]

The Desert region of Australia covers vast areas of Western Australia, the Northern Territory and South Australia. It is also the home of one of Australia's most important contemporary art movements. Acrylic dot painting began at Papunya in the early 70's; traditional practices of painting on implements, the body for ceremonial purposes and Sand painting were transposed on canvas, masonite and linen using acrylics. The approach and style of this transposition varies with community. For instance Balgo Hills artists are renowned for their use of thickly applied, vibrant colour, were as paintings and prints from Utopia are generally painted with earth colours and are very finely dotted. Important artists from this region include, Eubena Nampitjin , Elizabeth Nyumi , Tyumpo Tjapananangka , Marlee Naparula , Paddy Simms , and Mary McLean.

The two Islands, Bathurst and Melville Island are, after Tasmania the largest in Australia with a combined area of 7800 square Kilometres. Tiwi art is inextricably linked to Tiwi creation stories and is often characterised by an abstract mixture of lines, dots and form originating from the decorative body paint used by the Tiwi during ceremonies. Of special interest is the Tiwi Pukamani ceremony and the art associated with It. Aboriginal Art Prints has many works by senior Tiwi artists including Freda Warlipini , Kitty Kantilla , Bede Tungutalum and Maryanne Mungatopi.

Torres Strait
[Region]

The Torres Strait Islands are situated between the top of Cape York and Papua New Guinea. Due this geographic location Torres Strait Island art has a closer relationship to Pacific Islander art than in other regions of Australia. The cosmology behind much Torres Strait Island art relates directly with the sea. Recently, Torres Strait Island art and culture has undergone an expansion via the hands of four young printmakers; Dennis Nona , Billy Missi , David Bosun and Victor Motlop have, with the permission of their tribal elders, transposed stories that were originally told though traditional wood carving to limited edition prints from linocuts. Many of the stories have come by way of interviewing the elders of there community. Thus these linocuts have become a way of expanding and preserving Torres Strait Island culture for future generations.

Urban
[Region]

Urban aboriginal artists are situated in all major cities of Australia, particularly along the east coast were european expansion was most dominant during colonisation. As a result of early unfettered european expansion, much of the traditional indigenous culture was lost. Much urban aboriginal artwork focuses on this loss of culture and upon european colonisation. It can be directly political in content and/or is a rediscovery and revitalization of aboriginal culture within the urban context. Many urban aboriginal artists also have a strong grounding in western art through studies in fine art at a university level. Important urban aboriginal artists include, Sally Morgan , Judy Watson and Arone Meekes .
